MACBETH
The design for Lady Macbeth is meant to reflect her decay. This shows her at the beginning of Verdi's opera when she is powerful. The simple motif of a rose is used as well as the thorns as it protects itself.
This design shows the decay of Lady Macbeth. The rose motif is still used but it can be seen that the petals are start to fall, rip and turn brown. Additionally the rose disease black spot can be seen to cover the garment, this relates both to the decay and the story as she tries to rid the black spot. Gold can still be seen on the garment as she is still royalty she is just weaker.
The nightgown for the final scenes of the opera aims to show how much lady Macbeth has deteriorated. It incorporates dried petals and also black spot, a rose disease, which fits with the idea she cant get rid of the spot of blood on her hand.
The idea behind Macbeth is to slowly show him deteriorating and decomposing as he becomes weaker and more corrupt. This design shows him at the beginning of the play when he is moral and therefore strong and flourishing.
This is the first stage of Macbeth's decay. It shows how as he has become corrupt he has become weaker. Therefore the flowers have dried, the wood begins to rot and the colours have deteriorated.
